Linux Mint; Making Microsoft Irrelevant

The last thing that Microsoft wants is anyone who posesses the ability of critical thinking. Microsoft wants you to think Windows is the only way you can use a computer, and many people believe this is truly the case. In the year 2012, this is simply nothing more than a myth. Gaming seems to be the only remaining area where Windows and Linux differ. However, Steam is now being beta tested and is coming to Linux soon. This could be the final nail in the Microsoft coffin.

I started using Linux in 1999. That was the year I stopped using Microsoft products of any kind in any capatity for my personal use. I did still have to be subjected to Microsoft at work however. I am highly interested in computers, how they work, and learning how to make them do what I wish. In other words, I am far from normal people.

However, in the year 2012, Linux is just superior to Windows in almost every way. It is easy enough to use that seniors, and adults from all walks of life use it without thought, and usability of Linux does not require a degree in brain surgery.

I had a very strong desire to learn Linux, due to its power, speed and the fact it was able to do things in a much better way than Windows was. This was also the era of Windows ME, Windows 98, and the constant rebooting, and other headaches that come with Microsoft such as the virus problem. What drove me to try linux was that I spent more time on windows maintaining and rebooting the computer than actually using it. It drove me insane, and a good friend introduced me to Mandrake Linux (now known as Mandriva Linux).

The first command I learned was 'top' which displays all the top processess running on a computer using Linux. I was hooked after that. I wanted to know as many commands as I could possibly learn. I also discovered that I could make my computer a webserver with Linux and Apache. I learned html, php, and taught myself by using the internet everything I needed to know how to do cool and cutting edge things with my machine.

The first was using my new linux computer to become part of the internet with software already included. The greatest part is this software is free. Fast forward to 2012 and the amount of free software available has increased tremendously, along with the quality. At the time of this writing in November 2012, Linux is easier to install, more powerful, easier to secure, and is of much higher quality than Microsoft Windows. Here is a list of Linux software than can easily replace is non free counter parts;

  • Linux, a Secret no more

    There is a better way. Linux is not only higher quality software, it's also about freedom. I am asked why people do not know about Linux. Linux does not have a monopoly on the market as Microsoft does. Promoting Linux to the mainstream public is part of my goal here. As a a computer expert, I do not want to be associated with poorly written software such as Windows.
